Tuesday, August 5

i left work late - got there on "time" too, though like yesterday (when i took the birthday girl out to gobo and astralwerks and a made-to-order thunderstorm) i spent a good chunk of the day out of the office; picking up boxes, lunching lavishly, employing the postal service - and got off at clark st. to see if i could catch ester at home, technology having failed us. showing up in person didn't work either (again, i didn't know which button to push), so instead

i walked over to the promenade, and watched the upside-down sunrise. the sun emerged from beneath a low-lying thundercloud into the gloriously peach sky. it never quite made it out fully as a complete circle, because before the upper edge cleared the bottom of the cloud, the lower slipped behind a slimmer cloudstreak that bisected the distance to the (terrestrial) horizon. it had already completed its downward rising by the time i remembered i had my camera in my bag, but i took it out anyway and tried to capture what i could. (i haven't been using it nearly enough this summer; this will mostly have to do for documentation.) maybe it's cause i'm still such a new york rookie, but i can't take in that view, looking out into the harbor, without thinking of "american tune."

so, i know this is unconscionably geeky, and maybe bordering on wankerish (or wanksterish? what is that?), but: i downloaded of all the songs on this list - even the (count 'em) five that i already had in my collection, i downloaded, so that they'd all be nice cruncy authentic mp3 - and assembled the prescribed mix. it turned out to 80:30, just a tad too long to fit on a cd. maybe i'll edit out the end of GUFO. anyway, it's a fun listen. and perhaps the best possible use for filesharing software.

how come i feel so washed up at such a
such a tender age?
