train in vain

(anybody know why that song is called that? my dad wants to know.)

so, the 48, scheduled for 8:08, is 1:13 late, while the 8:52 282 is :05 late. since the former was supposed to get to new york over a half hour faster (arriving at 3:25 instead of 4:40), it now seems like they should both arrive at around the same time. so we'll take the earlier faster train that leaves later rather than the later slower train that leaves sooner. sound good? a: forty-two.

i'm in rochester now, having hitched a ride up with dad, jodymartha (six months yesterday) and eddie s. on thursday. very nice vacation except/as i haven't done much of anything. marthy and joda both had finalfinal papers due last night at midnight, which they've pretty much finished by now but spent most of the weekend playing minesweeper instead of writing. meanwhile i've been failing to apply m's "system" for four-suit spider. around my family is the only time i ever ever play computer games, since i don't have any on my 'book and didn't all through college, which still kind of amazes me. also, played my first two games of chess in ages (hm, might be a bug.)

we had a truly exceptional fine-dinin' meal at the new-to-me rio bamba one night (seriously, it rivals the best meals i've had in fancy philly places - pretty much everything was wonderful, certainly of course the ahi tuna and the orange parfait, but the seared foie gras with strawberry-rubarb compote was especially memorable and unusual) and some greasy grub at the 'lac-fest the next (where also i ran into mister cohen, my hands-down hippest h.s. history teacher.)

and we saw hitchhikers - not so bad, i thought, pretty good fun, all considered. fidelity-wise, the added arthur-trillian romance didn't bother me that much - remember, it's not entirely invented, it's just not supposed to happen until slatfatf, which i tend to think of as one of the best ones, possibly even the best novelistically speaking. the added (and wholly newly-devised) middle section was too much like boring rote science fiction action nonsense, even though it was kind of cool that they go to vitvoodle six and vogsphere (love those crabs), and pretty unnecessary, except in the sense that come to think of it there really isn't that much plot in the original book. also, the closing segue into restaurant is improved upon, which is nice but not saying much. what else...the guide animation sections were sort of weak. oh, and didn't you think zaphod's character was made much more one-dimensional and less appealing? i really didn't appreciate that.

anyhoo. so it's pretty soon we're off to enwhysee, to play with some of you for a little bit, then phila tomorrow. because...on tuesday...i start my new job...! which i might as well tell you now...is at petit 4 pastry studio, pretty much the awesomest sweet shop in town, which owner joe describes as a sort of zen studio-cum-"haven"-cum-school and oh yeah a business as well. what will i be doing there? they're going to teach me how to be a baker. is that the most exciting thing ever, or what? so psyched! ha yeah.

he's telling all of those lies
he swears he's never told before
but i doubt it
