06ixth impressions

Good on Epipihany then.

cuz January 1 is of course too early for anything of substance to take – it’s the holiday rush of non-realization preceding impossibly close before – really this week ought to be like the grace period between years. sort of a funny first week – i’ve been ex communicando, sans selphonium, somehow still socializing par for course – communiaction by bike – so let’s say it’s so and here i am on January 6, wringing in the oh six in fine style. cept it’s really 7, even when i started writing this though it was still the day.

well anyway i spent hours 0 thru 5.15 of the epiphany, plus the previous 3 thru 0 (?), in bed sleep. Which is to say, I came home from work on Wednesday midafternoon, went to take a nap before substitute yoga class, and woke up at quarter to five-thirty. (c. 14 hours later) Five-thirty being my at-work time. so, i went to work. then i came home and organized my tape collection, or i should say organized my tapes. even fell asleep somemore, tho as i had been telling everyone who wouldn't understand, after fourteen hrs. i was Poised to Rip! and thus:

whent to dig Andrew Gregori 04! at the tin angel, featuring special epiphany rendition of O. Henry's "Gift o. the Magi," with tinpanangelly musical interpersions with brother evan. kind of edgy for a traditionalist folkslinger like AG, but most nice. also splendid splendid was 2nd-billed Devon Sproule ("like a troll" except she's about as little like a troll as you could get. though, i guess kind of little, like a troll) who talked about sweet charlottesville and her maw-in-law and her crushing on jesse winchester + his son, but sang the sweetest gossamerest sassafrassy songs plus fiercey wit and funny plus cornucopian country-domestic-meets-mod-life imagery, 'it's a good time. good times' she says, plus also scats high and playful nuances on like "my baby just cares" and "at last." what i'm trying to say is, ester and co, take note. dunno why didn't i buy her cd from her (because i want the just-recorded not-yet-pressed she played all the songs frum, doh and that mary chapin carp. said she loved to bits. want andrews new won two.) anyway, the headliner turned out to suck, so i gulped my g+t and said hey to the random lovely swattie contingent and did the secret bakers handshackle with andr.

found some technology that basically i met up with rebecky and her new johnfriend at farm!c!a, then somehow we were in the middle of the khybersterior and i knew everybody on the dancefloor and was introducing them to themselves. even the magnetic fields were there. and all the post-pnuk chummies. we were all new friends. (dude! dude was at the chapel hill arcade fire show too dude! dude!) so pretty much that's where the ripping part happened or sth. flick i love danceing! !

[plus did i tell you this dream about david byrne while i was asleep, doing some kind of benefit performance for my school (but which one!?) sota-peeps cobblestone-streets swat-luv, actually it was in some italian village stage set, we all sitting on chairs across the piazza from db on outsize stage, singing some early t-heads then a marching song about rabbits with a chorus of tromping teenagers in helmets, then i was biking back and forth in front and talk/singing with him. and i had a long conversation with some girl about etymologies, and i think i re-figured out the meaning "anthrocephallous" in the dream, the same way i wood in awake life. that was part of the 14 hours.]

also what also made my nite last nite was trying to get the key in my bike lock, some twentysomethings come crusing down second jamblasting steve winwood's "valerie" from their car windows. (a house rmx!? or is that song somehow the secret origin of filter-house!?)

music: ok - first impressions of osix you notice i never did last (ha hardly) impressions of 05, well now i made a list at least, you can read that those that care, maybe i want to write something about literariness in album lyrics (q.v. goats, okkervil, hold steady, decemberists duh) and/or what "experimental" should mean in music - i.e. akron/family and skeletons are great, but the actual 'experiments' (pop music exploratory science) engaged in this year with great results are the fiery furnaces record (still getting to know it, but i find it vastly appealing than their 'normaller' stuff, obv. it's a pretty wild risk for an album) and petra's sell out (wow. results.) and most dramatically jamie lidell's multiply, a dynamically, often uncomfortably, innovative experiment, that, if it doesn't quite achieve a perfectly stabilized soul-electronica compound, but comes tantalizingly close, and remains excitingly listenable because it's -- no wait! the melding of my two jenres: synth and soul! -- truly An Experiment In Pop. okay, i guess i did.

but 06 first impressions well so far i've formed more opinions on the artwork than the music (basically that i like a lot of the images, but i'm not too crazy about most of the design.) but i can say that 4 (razorblade) is my de-facto jam of the moment, and in my head it's totally sweet tho on the other albums it might not have quite stacked that high. i kind of want to switch the chorus around. meanwhile (i've got) "nothing to say" sounds crazy like the strokes doing the magnetic fields, would almost fit in perfectly on i with that retitle, though yeah the lyrics aren't quite there. "juicebox" may be a lackluster single, we'll see. hopefully the second half of the album isn't as boring as i'm afraid i haven't noticed it might be being so far. anyway what i'm trying to say is that they played that track one last night and it was the thing of the week. right um 1IoE=AotY.

meanwhile i'm trying to do up this 50+60s.vs.06+05 mixtape for the girls in the car, as inspired by angela's amer-french one, and i bought a couple things at the marvellous the other day but i just realized the discs weren't in the cases, so now i'm going back to fix that. also going to 1. get a phone or sth. 2. scope PRX for "don't think twice" by the wonder who? 3. get new reflectors for my bike cuz the others just broke off 4. the marvelous thing 5. go to, probably, petit 4 to post this, did it happen? 6. put up the photos of wanakena. 7. dinner and dancing plans. 8. etc.

our hands in our pockets and our pockets in our pants

[eta:
kayso, that was weird. i'm posting this now, obviously, not then. of the above i only did 1. 2. (but failed) and 7. well, that's fine. i guess i'll put up the wanakena photos now - may not get around to writing about it, but you can see it here.

i liked ben's comment: "spirits were so light that even a monopoly game was non-competitive, cheerful, and hilarious to the end."

and now then i'll try to go for a run with my new shoes and cd player in the lovely sunshine, swing by the marvy, come back and get my bike, hopefully rest up a bit before yoga, then be very tired and probably sore tomorrow. sounds good eh!
